Vincent Keymer and Magnus Carlsen at grenke Chess Festival 2026

Keymer Leads Men's Winners in Karlsruhe as Freestyle Momentum Surges

The men's race at the grenke Freestyle Open 2026 delivered exactly what modern chess fans want: top-level quality, huge drama, and a tournament atmosphere at full scale.

Vincent Keymer won Freestyle Open A in Karlsruhe and secured his place in the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027. He finished tied on points with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and took first on tiebreak after nine rounds of elite-level pressure.

With 3,658 participants across the festival, grenke once again confirmed its status as the largest open chess tournament in the world. In parallel, strong live stream numbers and social viewing figures throughout the final weekend showed how quickly Freestyle is growing as a global spectator format.

A champion's finish and a world-class chasing pack

Keymer's result was built on six wins, three draws, and no losses. Behind the two leaders, the chasing group included Magnus Carlsen, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Alexey Sarana, Aryan Chopra, and Leon Luke Mendonca. The depth at the top made every half-point matter.

Karlsruhe also underlined what makes Freestyle so compelling in open fields: stars, rising talents, and specialists all competing in the same hall under the same format pressure.

Round 9: Tiebreaks decide the tournament

The final-round starting setup was Position 261, drawn by Radoslaw Jedynak, President of the Polish Chess Federation.

Across all nine rounds, the freestyle starting positions were: Round 1 (906), Round 2 (247), Round 3 (53), Round 4 (534), Round 5 (230), Round 6 (131), Round 7 (549), Round 8 (332), and Round 9 (261).

On top board, Vincent Keymer and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave agreed to an early draw. It was a pragmatic result in context, especially with Vachier-Lagrave entering the round with the weaker tiebreak position.

The chasing pack could not convert: Magnus Carlsen vs Aryan Chopra ended drawn, and Sarana vs Duda also finished level. With no decisive shift behind him, Keymer stayed on top and secured the title on superior tiebreak.

Behind Vachier-Lagrave, seven players shared places 3 to 9 on equal points, including Magnus Carlsen. It was a fitting close to a tournament defined by depth, pressure, and quality from first board to last round.

Freestyle's growth story is now impossible to ignore

From attendance to audience engagement, the signal is clear. Freestyle Chess is not a niche side format anymore. It is becoming a central stage for the future of competitive chess, and grenke continues to be one of the most important proving grounds.

Organizationally, grenke delivered an outstanding show: massive participation, smooth logistics, high-level coverage, and a final day that kept both in-person spectators and online viewers fully engaged.
