After 19 weeks of online play, the first part of the 2026 Freestyle Friday Championship has delivered two more confirmed names for the 2027 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship at Weissenhaus.
Pranav Venkatesh (India) finished first in the Open standings with 60 points. In the Women's standings, Anna Muzychuk (Ukraine) topped the field with 88 points. Both players have now secured their places at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort in northern Germany.
It is a milestone for the Freestyle Friday format: a weekly online circuit now feeding directly into the sport's biggest stage.
Pranav Venkatesh tops the Open standings
After 19 weeks of Freestyle Friday action, Venkatesh emerged as the Open leader with 60 points, earning the first qualification spot from the online series. Freestyle Chess marked the moment on social media as the Indian grandmaster punched his ticket to Weissenhaus.
Anna Muzychuk secures the Women's spot
Muzychuk built an unassailable lead in the Women's standings with 88 points, wrapping up her qualification before the first part of the series had even finished. The two-time women's world champion becomes the latest name confirmed for the 2027 title event.
Five of eight spots now filled in each field
The 2027 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship will feature eight players in each competition. With these latest results, five places are now confirmed in both the Open and Women's categories.
In the Open field, Venkatesh joins Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Vincent Keymer. In the Women's field, Muzychuk joins Bibisara Assaubayeva, Harika Dronavalli, Alua Nurman, and Dinara Wagner.
Three qualification spots remain open in each category. The picture for Weissenhaus is taking shape, but the final roster is still very much in play.
Two world championships, one venue
Both 2027 title events will be held at Weissenhaus. The Women's World Championship runs from February 5 to 7, 2027. The Open World Championship follows from February 12 to 14, 2027.
It will be the second Freestyle world championship cycle at the Baltic coast venue, which hosted the inaugural titles in February 2026. For Venkatesh and Muzychuk, the online grind of Freestyle Friday now has a fixed destination on the calendar.
Freestyle Friday continues after the summer break
The Freestyle Friday Championship will resume after the summer break. Its second part will decide another qualification spot in both the Open and Women's categories.
For players still chasing a Weissenhaus berth, the message is clear: the road to the 2027 world championship is not closed yet.
